  • it appears that my xanga site was going to be shut down if i didn't do a post. well..it's been awhile anyway so i guess i'll make a post.

as some of you know already my mom passed away a little over a month ago. it was on may 2nd. on aprill 22nd, she had a massive brain stem stroke and within a matter of minutes she went from totally conscious to completely comatose. she never woke up after that. i wasn't home at the time. i was in san francisco but both my dad and my sister were at home and were able to be with my mom during those last moments of consciousness. it's crazy when you think about these things but i know exactly what i was doing when my mom had her first stroke in 2006 and i know what i was doing when she had this second one. it seems so dumb that i was doing something like, shopping for a new camera, and my mom is having a stroke. *sigh* but obviously, we can never know these things are happening...

my mom went to a better place. i know that much. she is at peace now. i feel at peace because of that. i had a dream of her very recently. about two nights ago. prior to that, i hadn't really had any real dreams of her. it was very strange to me because everyone else in my family had dreams about her. it was strange to me because i have very vivid dreams. i dream all the time. my sister rarely has dreams and yet she had dreams of my mom but i didn't. in my most recent dream, i remember my mom looking at me. she looked so beautiful and so happy. happier than she had ever looked in her life on earth. she was looking at me smiling the biggest most beautiful smile and i gave her a big hug. i think she is happy now and so while i miss her incredibly much, i am glad to know that she is in God's arms now. He will never let her go.

    we will meet again.

  • Stefan Sagmeister

Well, yeah, it's been awhile. oops. Anyways, i've been meaning to do this for awhile so i am going to do it before i get lazy again...

As a graphic designer, i've been told again and again, it is really important to know what is out there as far as design, art, culture, influence. everything! it's not useful to just know about things that you like, you need to know about things you don't like too..or things that you might not normally think about. So...in light of that, i've decided to dedicate this blog to all things design. This means, i will profile a designer in each entry. designer can mean graphic, interior, architect, photographer, painter, sculptor, musician...all things design. feel free to suggest any of these types people that you respect and admire.

    SO...

to start off, in light of the fact that he will be in SF next week. I will be profiling the ever famous graphic designer, Stefan Sagmeister.

Stefan Sagmeister was born in Austria in 1962. He currently resides in New York and is one of today’s most well-known graphic designers.

He may be most famous for having words carved into his torso all for the sake of design. When Sagmeister was asked to design the poster for an AIGA lecture he was giving on the campus at Cranbrook near Detroit, he asked his assistant to carve the details on to his torso with an X-acto knife and used the result to create the poster.

He has also created many posters, some controversial including a poster depicting a traditional Cantonese image featuring four bare male bottoms. Some ad agencies boycotted the awards in protest and the Hong Kong newspapers received numerous letters of complaint.

In 2001 Sagmeister published his book Sagmeister, sub-titled Made You Look with the sub-sub-title Another self-indulgent design monograph (practically everything we have ever designed including the bad stuff.)

  • THE TREK to the TOP

so yeah, i've been lazy to upload the pictures but i hiked to the top of half dome last weekend. it was a long, arduous journey to the top and not without sweat and pain..but never doubt. i vowed to make it to the top and to the top i arrived. it took 11.5 hours, 2 hours of which were in complete darkness. (bad planning, but good thing we had flashlights!) plus there were 20 of us so we could keep eachother company. 14 out of 20 made it to the absolute top. the last 100 meters were completely SCARY! we had to climb up a slippery rockface which at some points seemed to be around ~90 degrees! it was at this point that my right quad and my left calf decide to start cramping. not a good thing when you are relying on your legs to hold you on the face of a huge rock formation. i was just PRAYING to make it to the top at that point. i found out that antacids work really well to get rid of cramps. one of my fellow hikers provided me with some "TUMS" that just made the cramps go away. anyway, here are some pics of the journey:

    to the top we go...

    just getting started..

    the infamous cables...

i'm delirious with happiness...either that or altitude sickness..

this is as close as i'll get to the edge..if i get too close i start to feel a little dizzy...

this guy on the other hand...

    HE'S NUTS!!!

  • While driving to work this morning I was almost T-boned by another car.  I notice that other driver has her hand up towards her face so I figure it's another crazy driver talking on her cell phone.  But upon taking a closer look, I have to do a double take...the woman is CURLING HER EYELASHES WHILE DRIVING.  Yes, while driving seems like the perfect time to:

    1) obstruct your line of vision

    2) decrease your coordination by having only one hand on the wheel

    3) place a delicate portion of your body into a metal curler

sometimes I DON'T UNDERSTAND people at all!!!!!
